Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide insights for educators seeking to enact culturally responsive-sustaining education and research in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The authors examine what happened when the community-based Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) initiative they engaged with traditionally marginalized high school students was interrupted as a result of physical distancing necessitated by COVID-19.

Design/methodology/approach

Data for this inquiry were taken from a broader on-going ethnography of youth’s participation in the YPAR project and included audio and video recordings from meetings of the YPAR initiative and messages exchanged between and among authors and youth. Authors used components of culturally responsive-sustaining education and theories related to student voice as an analytic frame through which they considered how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced their work.

Findings

Three findings are examined in this paper. They consider: how youth participants and the authors stayed connected after they were no longer able to meet in person; how youth chose to center the needs of the subsidized housing community where they lived while continuing their work; and how youth and authors navigated the uncertainties they encountered in looking ahead to future possibilities for their study as the pandemic continued.

Originality/value

This study provides urgently needed insights for educators and researchers grappling with how they may enact culturally responsive-sustaining education and research during the COVID-19 global pandemic and beyond.

Abstract

In this paper, we make a comparison of price efficiency between the new market (KOSDAQ) and the main board (KOSPI) in the Korean stock market. More specifically, we evaluate the relative price efficiency of both markets by comparing the speed, degree and accuracy in process of intraday price discovery. Each market’s speed and degree of price discovery are measured by WPC (weighted price contribution) devised by Barclay and Warner (1993) and WPCT (weighted price contribution per trade) proposed by Barclay and Hendershott (2003), respectively. Each market’s accuracy of price discovery is measured by unbiased regression coefficient used by Biais et al. (1999). We analyze 535 KOSPI stocks and 803 KOSDAQ stocks using 1-minute-interval transaction data collected from Bloomberg. The major findings of this paper are summarized as follows: Fist, the price discovery in KOSDAQ, the new market is slower than in KOSPI, the main board. Second, the morning session’s degree of price discovery per trade in KOSDAQ is smaller than KOSPI. Finally, the price discovery in KOSDAQ is more accurate than in KOSPI. Overall, our results indicate that the prices of KOSDAQ stocks are as efficient as the prices of KOSPI stocks, thought they have smaller firm size, younger ages, and greater uncertainty in cash flow and asset value than the main board stocks do.

Abstract

Though logistics security only took care of trading phase in the past, many countries in the world have begun to introduce logistics security system as its coverage has been extended from production stage to delivery at the final destination. Logistics security system has become indispensable element for global corporations involved in international trading and studies on logistics security keep going on. Most of the studies, however, are focused on discussion of system, cost and influence of logistics security and few of them have been specifically dealing with substantial effectiveness thereof. This study developed the models of supply chain security activities and their outcome by means of using Balanced Scorecard (BCS) which is a well known performance indicator to identify relationship between supply chain security activities and their accomplishment. In this study we have presented 8 supply chain frameworks, human resources management, information system management, facilities/freight management, security process, crisis management capability, relationship with partners, sharing of logistics information and logistics security accomplishment, with reference to standards of C-TPAT and AEO based on WCO framework, 10 supply chain security capabilities. This study further indicates that relationship with partners has more effect on logistics security accomplishment than sharing of logistic information. Just as relationship between corporations in chain of supply and sharing of information among them are important elements in management of supply chain, relationship with partners and sharing of logistic information will have positive effect on supply chain security accomplishment and raise its effectiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify latent classes of work values that influence the career choices of Korean workers through a person-centred approach. Because work values may be diverse in individuals, investigating the various combinations of those values will help understand individual's decisions to take, maintain and leave a job.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used a total of 15,103 datasets collected at the national level in South Korea. Data were analyzed by using latent class analysis (LCA); a three-step approach was employed to address classification.

Findings

As the results of this study, Class 3, “seeking balanced work values rather than income,” presented the highest level of job satisfaction, whereas Class 1, “seeking job security and income,” exhibited the lowest.

Originality/value

Employing an assessment tool to identify the distinct combinations of work values that individuals possess and then providing them with appropriate training and development programs and customized Human Resource (HR) policies aligned with the classes will be essential tasks for HRD (Human Resource Development)/HRM (Human Resource Management) practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to validate the Korean version of the decent work scale and examine the relationship between decent work and work engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

After completing translation and back translation, the authors surveyed 266 Korean employees from various organizations via network sampling. They assessed Rasch’s model based on item response theory. In addition, they used classical test theory to evaluate the decent work scale’s validity and reliability.

Findings

The authors found that the current version of the decent work scale has good validity, reliability and item difficulty, and decent work has a positive relationship with work engagement. However, based on item response theory, the assessment showed that three of the items are extremely similar to another item within the same dimension, implying that the items are unable to discriminate among individual traits.

Originality/value

This study validated the decent work scale in a Korean work environment using Rasch’s (1960) model from the perspective of item response theory.

Abstract

While the origin of Korean Industrial Relations goes back 150 years when the country opened its seaports to foreign countries, it didn’t emerge as a field of study until 1950s when academics began to write books and papers on the Korean labor movement, labor laws, and labor economics. In this paper, we sketch this history and describe important events and people that contributed to the development of industrial relations in Korea. Korean industrial relations in the early 20th century were significantly distorted by the 35-year-Japanese colonial rule (1910–1945). After regaining its independence, the U.S. backed, growth-oriented, military-based, authoritarian Korean government followed suit and consistently suppressed organized labor until 1987. Finally, the 1987 Great Labor Offensive allowed the labor movement to flourish in a democratized society. Three groups were especially influential in the field of industrial relations in the early 1960s: labor activists, religious leaders, and university faculty. Since then, numerous scholars have published books and papers on Korean industrial relations, whose perspectives, goals, and processes are still being debated and argued. The Korean Industrial Relations Association (KIRA) was formed on March 25, 1990 and many other academic and practitioner associations have also come into being since then. The future of industrial relations as a field of study in Korea does not seem bright, however. Issues regarding organized labor are losing attention because of a steadily shrinking unionization rate, changing societal attitude toward labor unions, and the enactment of new and improved laws and regulations regarding employment relationships more broadly. Thus, we suggest that emerging issues such as contingent workers, works councils and tripartite partnership, conflict management, and human rights will be addressed by the field of industrial relations in Korea only if this field breaks with its traditional focus on union and union–management relations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the mediating effect of organizational communication in the relationships among transformational leadership, organizational justice and knowledge sharing within the higher education setting in South Korea.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 321 university employees, including 151 faculty members and 170 administrative staff members, from a representative private university, participated in the survey as part of a consulting project for university innovation. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was mainly used for data analysis to identify the structural relationship among the research variables.

Findings

The results of this study confirmed that transformational leadership positively influences organizational justice and knowledge sharing. However, the influence of organizational justice on knowledge sharing was not statistically significant. The mediating effect of organizational communication among those relationships to increase the members’ knowledge sharing behavior was statistically significant.

Originality/value

In this study, holistic aspects of the organization, including leadership, organizational culture and organizational strategy, were examined for encouraging employees’ knowledge sharing behavior while an organization undergoes innovational changes. More practically, this study suggested that organizational communication could be used as one of the critical strategies in the process of university innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to outline a framework for marketing cultural goods (e.g. music) to global markets by examining modes of entry and positioning strategies used by media producers of the South Korean music industry.

Design/methodology/approach

An historic analysis was implemented to investigate the modalities and structures through which cultural products are produced and disseminated. Data for this study came from 314 articles collected from www.allkpop.com, a leading English-language, South Korean popular culture news site.

Findings

The cultural technology framework consists of the institutionalization of cultural technology, exportation of cultural content, collaborations with local talent, and joint ventures with local markets.

Research limitations/implications

The findings emerge from an analysis of South Korean popular music industries, and further research is needed to generalize the results across cultural industries.

Practical implications

The cultural technology framework can be applied to cultural industries such as music, film, comics, and art, where culture and language could be barriers to adoption.

Originality/value

This study outlines a framework for the modes of entry and positioning strategies of cultural goods (e.g. music) in international markets. Extant literature has examined global marketing from the purview of durable consumer goods and brands, with limited insights into cultural products. More broadly, this paper addresses the call for more qualitative inquiry into international marketing topics.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating effect of regulatory focus for educational welfare specialists in the relationship between their career commitment and job satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 650 responses were used for the data analysis after removing 80 incomplete responses through general data screening procedures. The two-step approach of SEM (structural equation modeling) analysis was mainly used for testing the hypotheses.

Findings

As the results of this study, career commitment was statistically significant for job satisfaction. Promotion focus of the regulatory focus was shown to have a mediating effect on the relationship between career commitment and job satisfaction, while prevention focus did not.

Practical implications

Theoretical and practical implications are provided and further studies are recommended. Career paths for educational welfare specialists should be provided to increase their career commitment. The training and development program geared by psychological assessment could be expanded to play a major role in giving an opportunity where employees perceive the type of regulatory focus that they have and the need to adjust it according to the job situation.

Originality/value

This study identified the mediating role of promotion focus when educational welfare specialists’ career commitment positively influences their job satisfaction. It is meaningful to look into the internal aspect of the variables, such as individuals’ self-regulation strategy, rather than external factors, such as compensation, to increase job satisfaction.

Abstract

The real costs of trade, the transport and other costs of doing business internationally, are very important determinants of a country's ability to participate fully in the world economy. Remoteness and poor transport and communications infrastructure isolate countries, inhibiting their participation in global production networks. This paper investigates the dependence of transport costs on geography and infrastructure It shows that infrastructure is quantitatively important in determining transport costs, and improvements in infrastructure can dramatically increase trade flows. It also finds that the low level of Northeast Asian countries' trade flows is largely due to poor infrastructure. Competition among countries in East Asia to maintain or become a logistic hub in the region is severe. This is reflected in the competition to build or expand airports and seaports in the region. Competing countries need to find ways of cooperating to achieve an efficient resource allocation in the region as a whole.
